Chetan Sharma Resigned From Indian Selection Panel After Making Controversial Remarks

Days after making controversial remarks on Virat Kohli, Chetan Sharma has now resigned as the Chief Selector of the Indian National Selection Committee.

As reported by ANI, Sharma was set to be given a chance to explain himself – but he instead sent his resignation letter to Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, for immediate resignation. Sharma’s recent actions have disturbed the cordial relationships between selectors and players, says a senior BCCI source to PTI.

A Controversy Triggered by Egos

To the unknown, one of the Chief Selectors of the Indian National Selection Committee – Chetan Sharma, has been caught revealing disturbing opinions about their decisions on Virat Kohli in a sting operation made by some journalists earlier this week.

This stirred up a controversy over Kohli’s removal of the captaincy from ODIs, of which the public is partially aware. Many have opined that Kohli and BCCI had a conflict of opinions, especially with then President Sourav Ganguly – regarding his captaincy.

Later, Kohli, in a press interview, revealed that none had communicated about the decision of dropping him down – triggering controversies.

Well, Chetan Sharma, in his sting operation, quashed Kohli’s remarks on BCCI – that he fake reported on his status as a victim and intentionally defamed Ganguly in this issue. Also, he said that Ganguly has even asked Kohli not to step down as the ODI captain!

Though BCCI termed Chetan’s revelations as loose talk – it made a deep impact on the relationship between them and the media, and the players. Talking to PTI (via Economic Times), a senior BCCI source said that;

“No player or selector will be comfortable in sharing a cordial relationship even with well-meaning journalists after this sting as the trust factor has been compromised.”

However, all these now led to Chetan Sharma resigning from his post with immediate effect. It was reported that BCCI is planning for an internal trial – for Chetan to give a chance to explain himself – but he decided to proceed with the resignation anyway.

He reportedly submitted his resignation letter to Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary, on Friday – which the latter accepted. This is the second major incident concerning BCCI – after it fired all the National Selectors of the Men’s team in November 2022 – after India lost the T20I World Cup in the semi-final stage.
