Sri Lankan Cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka Arrested Over Sexual Assault

In an embarrassing incident, Sri Lankan batsman Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested by the Australian police over a sexual assault case that happened at the Rose Bay Hotel Sydney.

Gunathilaka has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I World Cup due to a hamstring injury and replaced by Ashen Bandara. Yet, he remained with the squad until their fixtures ended. He’s now in the custody of New South Wales police while the investigation of the incident is ongoing.

Sri Lanka Cricket Player Arrested

In the wee hours of November 6th, New South Wales police arrested a Sri Lankan player named Danushka Gunathilaka over a sexual assault against a woman. As per police a statement from the New South Wales police;

“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday, 2 November 2022. As part of ongoing investigations, a crime scene examination was undertaken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday.”

Gunathilaka was arrested from his hotel Rose Bay in Sydney, in the early hours of Sunday and is now in their custody. Also, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a hotel on Sussex Street, Sydney, shortly before 1 AM on November 6th and taken to Sydney City Police Station.

He, too, was charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The man was reported to be a Sri Lankan, too, and was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL mode.

On the other hand, more news regarding Danushka Gunathilaka is expected to surface soon as the police are investigating the incident. Gunathilaka has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I World Cup due to a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ashen Bandara.

Yet, Sri Lanka has been ruled out of the tournament due to regular disqualification after all the matches played in the Super 12 stage. This was the second time Gunathilaka has appeared in an embarrassing moment, with the first one being during a series after England last year.

He, along with other teammates – Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella, was reportedly suspended for breaking the bio bubble and stepping outside. After being whitewashed in the hands of hosts, these three Sri Lankan players were seen roaming outside their hotel premises – which was strictly restricted then.

In a more intriguing incident, Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella were seen smoking in the streets of London at midnight. Both the players have their masks handy, but neither of them was seen wearing them.
