Indore bags the cleanest city title in Swachh Survekshan 2022

The central government’s annual cleanliness survey of urban areas under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2022 was concluded the last month. The survey results suggest that Indore bagged the cleanest city award for the sixth time in a row.

According to the survey, the top 7 cleanest cities are Indore, Surat, Bhopal, Mysuru, Navi Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati. All these cities also bagged 5-star garbage-free certifications. While Indore has earned a 7-star garbage-free certificate.

The Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has released the list of the top 100 cities that have performed best in managing waste and maintaining hygiene across the localities over the year. The cities are categorized according to their population and number of clusters.

Agra in Uttar Pradesh stood as the last city on the list. The New Delhi Municipal Council area was adjudged the cleanest small city, while Gujarat’s Ahmedabad and Karnataka’s Mysuru were given the award for the cleanest mega city and medium city. Visakhapatnam was given a clean big city award, while Rajkot was adjudged as the best self-sustainable city. Madya Pradesh is considered the best-performing state in terms of cleanliness on October 2.

The awards have been presented by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, to the urban corporations. In her speech, she lauded the efforts of Safai Mitras and their constant contribution to the cleanliness of citizens since the pandemic.

The total number of cities which have been considered for the contest is 4,354, including 62 cantonment boards and 91 Ganga towns. The cities are selected on the primary basis of votes received by the residents of the cities. The government has created a portal for voting.
